Description: This is a historically important and well done Fine Antique Black Americana Alabama Folk Art Portrait Painting, Watercolor on Paper, depicting an old African American woman wearing a hair bonnet, pink shawl, and woolen checkered blue coat. This painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner: "O.S. Roret 1904." The surname "Roret" is extremely uncommon, and according to Ancestry, the surname Roret was found in the USA between 1880 and 1920. In 1880 there were 14 Roret families living in Alabama. This was about 93% of all the recorded Rorets living in the United States. Alabama had the highest population of Roret families in 1880. The woman in this portrait was likely a former enslaved woman, and her proud and dignified portrait represents a window into the Reconstruction Era South that is seldomly seen. Approximately 13 x 15 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 8 x 10 inches. Very good condition for age, with some light scuffing and edge wear to the antique frame (please see photos.) Acquired in Pasadena, California.
