Description: First Day of Issue Winter Olympics Ice Dancing Stamp Cache Envelope Enclosure 29¢ Salt Lake City UT Jan 6 1994 Winter Olympics Ice Dancing Ice Dancing The sport of ice Dancing combines skating with ballroom dancing and differs from regular pair skating in several very important ways. In ice dancing for example, the couple may separate only ever so briefly to change position or direction No high lifts are permitted and each partner must have one skate on the ice at all times except during brief lifts and spins when the woman, may have both skates off the ice The couples perform many moves developed specifically for ice dancing and these moves closely resemble steps used in ballroom dancing. Ice-dancing competition consists of three parts that are performed in the following order [1] compulsory dances. [2] the original set pattern dance, and (3) free dancing Compulsory Dances count for 30 percent of the total score and all couples perform three particular dances to the same music A typical group of compulsory ice dances would be based on the waltz, the rumba, and the tango Skaters must perform the dances to official diagrams and each couple must begin the first two dances, called set pattern dances, at the same place on the rink For the third dance, called the optional pattern dance, a couple may begin anywhere on the rink they wish The judges award a separate score for the performance of each of the three dances. The Original Set Pattern Dance makes up 20 per cent of a couple's score and each set of partners select their own steps and music However, all couples must choose music that follows a certain dance rhythm announced in advance The dance may last up to three minutes and couples receive scores for technical merit and artistic impression Artistic impression includes how well a couple expresses the tempo of the selected music Free Dancing accounts for the remaining 50 per cent of the total score The couples select their own combinations of dance movements but may not repeat combinations. They also select their own music, but it must have variations in tempo and be suitable for dancing Each couple must complete their program within four minutes. The judges grade each couple's total program on technical merit and artistic impression. In scoring artistic impression. they consider the composition of the dance as well as how meritoriously the partners interpreted the music. Since there seems to be a great deal of confusion between Pair Skating and Ice Dancing, we thought it might be advantageous to our readers to also cover a little about the other event in pair skating events, the couples try to express a feeling of harmony and teamwork through their skating Pair skating involves certain moves specifically designed for a man and woman skating together. The most spectacular moves are various lifts in which the man picks up his partner and carries her above his head. Pair skaters perform most moves in unison but the partners may separate at times and perform individually, but the two must maintain the impression that they are performing as a true team Competition in pair skating consists of only two parts [1] the short program and [2] free skating. The Short Program counts about 30 per cent of each pairs score and calls for six moves that all pairs must perform. However, each couple may arrange the required moves and the steps that link them in any order and pattern. The pairs select their own music and the program must be completed within two minutes The judges score each couple on technical merit and artistic impression and base the artistic impression score on such factors as how well the pair expresses a sense of unity and how smoothly their steps linked the various moves. Free Skating makes up about 70 per cent of each pair's total score. The couples select their own moves and their own music. Each pair's program may last up to five minutes and as in the short program, the judges give scores for technical merit and artistic impression in scoring artistic impression, they rate each pair's program on composition and style as well as consider how thoroughly the couple express a feeling of togetherness.
