Description: FRANCE (1865) French Line Built by Chantier de l’Atlantique, St. Nazaire, Frane. Tonnage: 3,300. Dimensions 355’x43’. Paddle-wheels, 12 knots, side lever engines. Two masts and two funnels. Launched October 1, 1864. In France-West Indies service 1865-73. Lengthened to 395 feet in 1874. Converted to screw propulsion: Compound engines, also mizzen mast was added in 1874. Placed in Havre-New York service. Transferred back to West Indies trade in 1883. Broken up by French shipbreakers in 1910. Note: Vessel was listed as La France in some directories. "Passenger Ships of Past and Present" by Eugene C. Smith."
