The .30-06 cartridge, first developed in 1906, was the official U.S. rifle and light machine gun cartridge in both World Wars and Korea. During the 1930s, Frankford Asenal was the only plant in the U.S. producing military small arms ammunition. By 1943, Frankford Arsenal was manufacturing nine different types of .30 caliber loadings, including DUMMY cartridges used for weapons function testing. The standard Dummy cartridge at the start of WWII was the M1906, which had been in use since 1907 and had gone through 17 revisions. By then, the M1906 Dummy was using M1/M2 bullets, a corrugated case with no holes, and an empty primer pocket. Peak production of 20,000 Dummy cartridges per day was reached in 1943, often using second-class and recovered components, as well as steel cases. This also led to variations in headstamp markings.
