Description: This beautiful banjo I just finished today October 17th 2024. It has a beech neck and tiger maple body. It’s 35 5/8” total length, 11” wide, 2 3/8“ side height. I got the bridge 24” from the nut in the pictures. I used aqua fortis on the neck and top and bottom like you see Wallace Gussler use in the YouTube video of making a flintlock rifle when he worked at Colonial Williamsburg. I like using aqua fortis because there is no dye or stain that will ever leak through the finish and discolor clothes or get in your hands plus it is historically accurate and love how it embellishes the tiger stripe on this maple. The steel strings give it a nice crisp loud tone and it has a great feel to it. I’m really happy with how this turned out. I will enclose a 5 page single space typed set of guidelines that i wrote this summer that talks more about me and my family history and things like my favorite tuning and tips on using these violin pegs. I forgot to mention that I used solid ebony violin pegs that fit into holes that were reamed with two different violin peg reamers with one being special made for that 5th peg. So what the peg reamers do is cut the same thickness and taper in the wood that matches the pegs which results in the best friction fit string holding tension that is possible and probably better than originals. The beech neck is the stoutest and best neck for a banjo because it doesn’t move and is a reason the old timers used beech for block planes and other important tools. I got several musicians who are repeat customers that want banjos made of different kinds of wood and steel and nylon strings. Nylon strings will work on this one. All the wood came locally from north central West Virginia. Don’t miss out on this beautiful instrument! Several times people have wrote to me that they had been watching one of my banjos online for awhile and was disappointed that it sold and my advice for you is don’t be one of them. I make these in honor of Stanley Hicks with his foxfire book patterns as a part of his legacy for keeping our mountain folk traditions alive. If you haven’t heard of Stanley Hicks or Frank Profitt then look them up on YouTube as you will be really amazed and entertained. Thank you!
