Description: 10 Millionen Mark, P-S1014. German Railroad. Back is blank. The Deutsche Mark, commonly referred to as "DM" or "D-Mark," served as the official currency of West Germany from 1948 until 1990 and continued to be the currency of unified Germany until the euro was adopted in 2002. In English, it was generally known as the "Deutschmark." The currency was subdivided into 100 pfennigs. The Deutsche Mark was first introduced in 1948 during the Allied occupation, replacing the Reichsmark, and became the official currency of the Federal Republic of Germany upon its establishment the following year. On December 31, 1998, the European Union Council established a fixed, irrevocable exchange rate for the Deutsche Mark to the euro, set at DM 1.95583 to 1, effective January 1, 1999. The Deutsche Mark was officially replaced by the euro in 1999, although its coins and banknotes remained in circulation, valued in euros, until the new euro notes and coins were introduced on January 1, 2002. The Deutsche Mark lost its status as legal tender immediately with the euro's introduction, unlike other eurozone countries where both currencies coexisted for a transitional period of up to two months. Nevertheless, Mark coins and banknotes continued to be accepted as valid payment methods in Germany until March 1, 2002. Item ordered may not be exact piece shown. All original and authentic.
