Description: Ship History: "Going Bananas: 100 Years of American Fruit Ships in the Caribbean" by Mark Goldberg, Volume 3 of the American Merchant Marine History Series, printed 1993, softbound w/ 606 pages. The late Mark Goldberg was a passionate chronicler of ship history. Time was, American-owned ships plied the Caribbean, carrying sun-seeking passengers up top and tropical fruit down below. United Fruit Company's "Great White Fleet" was the most well-known, but also covered in detail in "Going Bananas" are ships from the Red D Line, Atlantic Fruit Company, Colombian Steamship Company, Cuyamel Fruit Company, and Standard Fruit (Vaccaro Line). Some of the vessels carried only two dozen paying passengers in basic accommodations, but others were as luxurious as transatlantic liners and transported hundreds in comfort. Nautiques customers will recognize such names as PASTORES and CHIRIQUI from menus and brochures available on the site. Excellent condition.
