Description: A rare original Gustave Baumann print printed directly from the original wood block in 1916! Up for sale is the original Gustave Baumann woodcut "A Demonstration of Table Manners" from an edition of 525, that was printed in 1916 by the publisher- Brothers of the Book.This is an actual woodcut, printed directly from the wood block carved by Baumann and provided to Brothers of the Book for printing this image.This image was taken from the book “Pirates! Or, The Cruise of the Black Revenge: A Melodrama in Thirteen Acts”. The author of the story is Kendall Banning, with original woodcuts by Gustave Baumann. Edition- FIRST 1916, limited to 525 total copies. Printed on Kozuchi handmade Japanese paper. (4to / quarto )The book was only available for purchase by members of Brothers of the Book, of which Gustave Baumann was one. This is the fifth image out of 13 original woodcuts created as illustrations for the Kendall Banning book “Pirates! Or, The Cruise of the Black Revenge: A Melodrama in Thirteen Acts”. The expert on Gustave Baumann, Gala Chamberlain, stated that Baumann provided the original wood blocks to the publisher (Brothers of the Book), and they printed the wood cuts on one side of double leaves of Kozuchi handmade Japanese paper.” This original 1916 woodcut is about 7 1/4" x 5 7/8". The total page is approximately 7 3/4" x 10 1/2". After the 1916 edition was sold out, another version of the book (first thus) was produced in 1918. That book was done in a 2/3 size format and the images in it are photoengraved (lithographic copies, not wood cuts). It is unknown how many book copies of that photoengraved reproduction were made.
