Description: This listing is for an elaborate hand colored profile of the city of Leiden Netherlands Panorama. It measures 34.75” diameter x 13.4” high. The print has been exceptionally maintained. The frame shows wear at the corners. The original copper engraving was composed of three separately printed leaves and manufactured by Christian Hagen in 1670. It was later colored by hand. At the end of the l6th and the first half of the 17th century, the buildings in the medieval part of the city became strongly densified. The city was significantly expanded in a number of areas in the first half of the 17th century. During all these expansions, the city council tried, with varying degrees of success, to subject the layout of the plots and buildings to regulations. The starting points were a mixture of urban development, social, environmental and aesthetic arguments. After completion of the city expansions, a new large map of Leiden was commissioned in 1667. In this profile we see the existing city gates replaced by new ones. These gates by city architect Willem van der Helm had a more representative than a defensive function.
