Description: Up for sale is a Haitian mini-Nativity made of metal and distributed through Beyond Borders. The Nativity is in new condition; it has never been displayed. This mini metal nativity supports fair trade and the artisans of Haiti and is crafted out of metal drums. Made for display indoors and outdoors, it measures 6” x 6” x 1” and has a built-in stand. It is brown and features a manger scene with stars, animals, Joseph, the baby Jesus, and Mary. This tiny three-dimensional nativity scene features wonderful design and detail. Entirely handmade with a hammer and chisel, it is created from recycled metal in Haiti. The following three paragraphs provide a little background history about Haitian Metal Art from Beyond Borders Fair Trade, an import and wholesale company, that works with 100 artists in Haiti and offers retail stores and garden centers over 300 designs. "In the 1950’s a railway mechanic working in the Dominican Republic, Georges Liautaud (born 1899), decided it was time to go back to his home village, Croix des Bouquets, Haiti, to spend his last few remaining years near those he loved. The average life expectancy in Haiti at the time was 56 years. When Liautaud returned, he found that, indeed, many of his friends and family had passed on to the next life. He began to honor them by carving elaborate crosses for their burial sites out of iron, his material of choice from his train-repairing days. Shortly before this time Dewitt Peters, an American Quaker pacifist, traveled to Haiti to teach English. A water-colorist himself, he recognized the extraordinary artistic talent of many Haitians but the lack of organized support for the artistic community. In partnership with the Haitian-American Institute and alongside several dedicated Haitian artists, Peters established Le Centre D’Art in Port au Prince in 1944 with the purpose of identifying and encouraging Haitian artists, giving them a central home to explore and develop their talent. Beyond Borders has been working with and nurturing Haitian metal artists in Croix-des-Bouquets for fifteen years. Beyond Borders meets directly with the artists to ensure that quality and craftsmanship standards remain high. From this comes constant exchange and blossoming of new product and design ideas. Most importantly, Beyond Borders sees real economic improvement and lives bettered through the creation and sharing of their beautiful art."
