Offered is Harrison Bader’s Game Used Signed hat worn for four of his six 2019 postseason games, including his first postseason game, hit and RBI. The hat shows light use appropriate to its use in four cooler weather games. It is very rare for a Cardinals item to be authenticated as Game Used, as they tend to stick to Team Issued, as the standards for Game Used authentication are demanding (authenticator must witness the game use and uninterrupted journey of the item into their hands for authentication), logistically challenging and expensive to have the hourly authentication consultant focused on only one item, as they must be to meet the authentication requirements. Easy for baseballs and broken bats; difficult for other equipment, especially player worn. This item is one of those many items authenticated as Team Issued despite being Game Used. Since the Cardinals are a cost-conscious team, they don’t waste much. Uniforms (daily) and hats (weekly) are cleaned and items are made resiliently enough they are often used until replacement is required. Uniforms are cleaned after use unless earmarked for replacement or certification. This hat was first worn in Games 1 (first Postseason hit) and 2 of the NLDS in Atlanta. Game 3 in St Louis was on a Sunday, so the Sunday Home Hat (currently/soon to be listed separately) was used while this hat was cleaned. Bader didn’t play in Game 4, but wore this hat again and got his first career Postseason RBI in Game 5 in Atlanta. The hat was again worn for Games 1 and 2 (see Getty image from Game 2) of the NLCS; however, due to the gNats wearing Red home hats, the Cardinals utilized their rarely used solid Navy hats for Games 3 and 4. The next clue is the date of Team Issued authentication: Spring Training 2020, not long before the COVID Shutdown. Clearly, the Cardinals don’t issue equipment for use the year after it would be used. This is a function of how their season concluded. After the Game 2 NLCS loss in St Louis, the hat was cleaned and awaited a Game 5 reunion that wouldn’t happen due to the sweep in Game 4 in Washington DC. With the Cardinals wearing their Navy “Away” hats in Games 3 and 4 and their season ending in DC, authentication en masse (the way the Cardinals mostly only do authentication) occurred when the team next reassembled, which was Spring Training 2020. (For any unfamiliar, the Cardinals changed their hat usage in the last decade. The solid Navy Blue hat that was worn for ALL away games before during and briefly after the Albert Pujols years in StL was relegated to use ONLY against opponents with Red Home Hats: Reds, Phillies, gNats, Angels, etc. Aside from Road Games against these opponents and throwback or other special event hats, the Red Home/Away hat is worn for ALL GAMES.)
