Alan Ladd is Duncan Craig - a businessman who has gotten a raw deal on a mining investment and now he's on a plane bound for Capetown to get even. While on the flight, he meets the lovely Judie Nordhal (Joan Tetzel) and is intrigued by her. She's going to Capetown to investigate her father's death - she doesn't like the initial verdict of suicide. Once in Capetown, Ladd has a satisfying scene where he beats the daylights out of his former business partner. Well, with that out of the way, might as well try to get the girl, right? Ladd signs on as first mate of a whaling ship that is to transport Judie to the ship where her father died. Ladd starts digging into her father's murder but gets stonewalled at every turn - finally having to resort to some brute force to get anyone to talk. Eventually he discovers that Judie's suspicions about her father's death are indeed well-founded. Along the way he will learn the ins-and-outs of the whaling business along with the numerous and considerable dangers. But the most dangerous animal of all turns out to be Judie's former fiancee (Stanley Baker) who will stop at nothing to conceal the truth - leading to a deadly shipwreck and a furious chase across the icy Antarctic! Aside from being a good Alan Ladd adventure, this film is also notable for parts of it being filmed on actual whaling ships - it's a rare archive of mid-20th century whaling, when the industrial killing was at its height. Modern audiences will find an emotional resonance that was not present when this film was made in the 1950s as the welfare of whales was not given the consideration it is today. There are some pretty graphic scenes of whale carcasses being processed, and the characters all have a great time hunting and killing the whales which carries some degree of social commentary that was entirely unintentional when the film was made (sensabilities have certainly changed over the years). Ladd does great in a role very familiar to him - a confident everyman who is thrown into some extraordinary situations. As always, Stanley Baker is fantastic as the scheming and duplicitous villain. A fantastic surprise is Jill Esmond as a female Norwegian whaling ship captain who is every bit as capable as any man, maybe even moreso! A bit of trivia - Alan Ladd collected whale teeth off some of the ships he was on during this film, and he gave them out to friends at the film's premiere. These teeth, which all have an accompanying plaque, are highly sought-after collector's items today.
