History & Meaning of Catholic Index of Forbidden Books, by McCabe, book banning

Description: The History and Meaning of the Catholic Index of Forbidden Books, by Joseph McCabe. Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Publications, 1931; the date is not stated in the book, but can be found elsewhere in information on the author. Softcover, 107 pages, approx. 8½” x 5½”. Currently in protective sleeve, and will be shipped that way. Book banning is very much a current issue in the early 21st century, but not at all a new issue or practice. The Roman Catholic Index of Forbidden Books (Index Librorum Prohibitorum) was official and active from 1560 to 1966. McCabe’s study of the Index is comprehensive and enlightening. (This seller chuckles while wondering: was McCabe’s book added to the list of those forbidden?) Joseph Martin McCabe (1867-1955) was an English freethought writer and public speaker. He was a former Roman Catholic priest, but moved away from his faith and left the priesthood in 1896. His writings and lectures covered a wide range, including philosophy, history, evolution, and women’s civil rights. In addition to his own prolific activity, McCabe is also remembered as being critiqued by G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) in his book Heretics (1905); McCabe is the subject of the sixteenth chapter, titled “On Mr. McCabe and a Divine Frivolity.” Anyone interested or concerned about book banning in all of its forms would benefit in reading this extended essay. Condition of the book is “good” to “very good,” especially considering its age: no marks in or out, no tears or creases, staples still in place, everything securely intact. Careful wrapping and fast shipping. Please look around the store. Lots of books & other media, quilt & cross stitch patterns, car mags & catalogs, home décor, and many more treasures-- and more listed every day.
