Description: Re-print of the book the book published in 1816; Foreword: In the period leading up to the War of 1812 the western regions of the United States produced some of the most vociferous advocates of war with Great Britain. The western "war hawks" feared above all else an Indian all-ance with the British which would jeopardize American control over the area. The War of 1812 helped allay those fears. The Indian menace in the Old Northwest was greatly reduced and settlement proceeded thereafter with relatively little bloodshed. Fewer complaints were heard about the encroachments of British fur traders on unoccupied American territory. Furthermore many American soldiers from other parts of the country who fought in the West returned to settle there after the war, accelerating development of the region. A number of military heroes from the western campaigns received public ac-claim-men like William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, and Andrew lackson-and later turned their popularity to political advantage. Robert McAfee, a Kentuckian who had participated in some of the battles in the West, provided the American public with the first thoroughgoing account of the war in the West with his History of the Late War in the Western Country, published in 1816. McAfee's parents had been amons the first to settle in Kentucky and he was thoroughly western in his outlook.
