Please look closely at photos as they are part of the description. The year 1946 was an exciting time of transition for U.S. railroads. After a four-year suspension of passenger motive power deliveries due to WWII ended, dieselization flourished. There was spirited competition between manufacturers to produce gleaming diesel locomotives for fleets of newly equipped passenger trains. ALCO captured its share of attention with a ruggedly handsome newcomer, the PA (cab unit and PB (booster). The first PA, built on June 27, 1946, was ALCO's 75,000th locomotive. This three unit A-B-A set, decorated in the timeless Santa Fe War Bonnet scheme (#51LAB), traveled around the country in celebration of ALCO's landmark. Widely regarded as the most stylish diesel locomotive ever produced, the PA was distinguished from the competition. The square-looking six-foot long nose, automobile styled grilles and rain gutter, along with an underframe crowded by 15-1/2 foot wheel-base trucks gave the PA a business-like, and at the same time, attractive look. The PA's appearance is sleek and long, though at 65 feet 8 inches, it is five feet shorter than the competition's E7. The PA's performance was as impressive as its style. It was equipped with a turbo-charged 16-cylinder, ALCO 244 engine. The PA's primary duties were powering premier passenger trains, although its big motors made it equally at home in freight service.
