RBC 33546 Early in the Morning They Woke Up DVD-NTSC No zone restriction А поутру они проснулись DVD-NTSC VIDEO Comedy, Russia, 2003, 90 min Audio: Russian DD 5.1 Format: Wide Screen, 16:9 Subtitles: English “And When They Woke In the Morning”: Everlasting Shukshin novels to touch your heart Short content. The film is based on Vassily Shukshin’s unfinished novel and his three stories : “The Offence”, “The Night In the Boiler-House”, “Say Hello To Sivvy”. The characters wake up in the morning and find themselves in the drunk tank. Each one of them tries to recollect the preceding events. The premiere of Sergey Nikonenko’s “And When They Woke In the Morning” was shown in August 2003 at “The Window to Europe” Vyborg Festival. The main sponsor was “The Russian Standard” at whose expense the audience was offered free vodka before the film’s showing. It looked like a nice beginning to the film. Sergey Nikonenko long ago graduated from both the Actor and Director Faculties of VGIK (The State Institute of Cinematography). He has been the director of several full-length films. But people remember him mostly as an actor and are amazed upon hearing of his work as a director. However, he does shoot and is shot in his own film, though maybe he should not. The latest roles played by Nikonenko, even episodic ones, have been done in a highly professional way, for instance, his work in Vadim Abrashitov’s “The Time Of the Dancer”. Nikonenko’s character from “And When They Woke In the Morning” finds himself among the “visitors” of a drunk tank, and to portray his personality Nikonenko’s intrinsic truthfulness and vividness were needed. However, the actor was obviously lacking them in this film. The trials and tribulations of a director must have drained Nikonenko’s resources as an actor. So that is what we have ended up with. The audience does not believe either his sober eyes, or a single word uttered by his character. On the whole, the feature is lively and bright. The audience laughed – mostly in response to Shukshin’s wonderful dialogues. When you listen to them you cannot but think how great a master of the word Shukshin was. Today’s screen writings look pale and vague in comparison with the vivid and true-to-life language of his works, as well as with his vision of the world. But even Shukshin’s texts do not save the film. In a succession of scenes the characters tell their stories, describing the circumstances under which they got drunk and were brought to the sobering-up centre. The process of this story-telling is like bead-threading. If any of the beads are missing, nobody will notice. You look at your watch every now and then waiting for the end of the film, and eventually you start to count, how many people there are up in their bunks as all of them are expected to tell their stories. Is this one the last? What a relief! Sergey Garmash’ s work is brilliant, one of the highest calibre to be demonstrated in small parts both to the audience and would-be actors as a sample of an actor’s play. Eugeny Stychkin’s work is also one of the best in the feature, as well as in his career. An amazingly integrated whole. www.kultura-portal.ru Director: Sergey Nikonenko Cast: Evgeny Stychkin, Sergey Garmash, Sergey Nikonenko, Alexander Abdulov, Igor Bochkin В основе этой комедии лежит неоконченная повесть В.М.
