It has a fullered triangular blade and steel scabbard. The last model of standard issue socket bayonet was used until 1884 when the new model introduced a rod bayonet. It is attached by fitting it over the barrel muzzle and is locked into place with a locking ring. Overall, this socket bayonet is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age. The socket, shoulder and blade have scattered spots of erosion and oxidation. The locking ring rotates freely. The screw head has light tool marks with a strong slot. The blade edges have light nicks and dings. The tip is intact and comes to a dull straight point. Not much of the blued finish is left. The ricasso is marked "US" with no other visible markings. The metal scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The frog restraining bar is intact and functional. The metal body has light erosion and oxidation. The original finish has been scrubbed / worn off and now is in the white. The pattern 1885 frog is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. These were made as a solution to carry the M1873 socket bayonet on the Mills cartridge belt. It also fits on the M1872 and M1884 waist belts. The brass hook is intact and has tarnished with age. The leather frog has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. The leather is a little dried out and has some wrinkles, scrapes and finish loss. The brass hook swivels smoothly. Most of the original leather finish remains. The swivel is marked "US" in the front and "RIA" (Rock Island Arsenal) on the back of the brass hook. This socket bayonet, scabbard and 1885 frog will be a great addition to your Trapdoor rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
