Description: Size: Mount 40.5 x 30.5 cm, print inside mount 18.5 x 28.5 cm Condition: Very good condition, clean and no tears or creases. The mount is new. The title of the print borrows lines from Milton's Paradise Lost - entitled "An Angel gliding on a Sun-beam into Paradise", it goes on to say "Down thither, prone in flight, Lo Schwelly speeds & with her brings the Gems, and Spoils of Heav'n." The print shows the anything but angelic Juliane von Schwellenberg, laden with sacks of money labelled "£1000000" per annum," gliding on the sunbeams and favour of the royal family. Schwellenberg was one of two original attendants on the 17 year old Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who were allowed to accompany the young Princess from her German homeland to England where she married George III in 1761. Once installed at court, the famously tight-fisted, rude, and controlling Madame Schwellenberg insisted upon being a gatekeeper to the queen, restricting access to her majesty solely to those she allowed. She also "kept" the queen's jewels, seen in this print in a bag hanging from her belt. The print was originally published by Hannah Humphrey in 1791, but this is a reprint (from the original Gillray engraved plate) by Henry Bohn dated c1850.
