Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, people's lives, and landscapes. Utagawa Hiroshige's paintings were called Hiroshige Blue because a beautiful blue color characterized them. Hiroshige Blue influenced Western painters such as Impressionist Van Gogh and Monet, who originated in France in the late 19th century.
