Description: John James Audubon. Anna Hummingbird. No 51. Plate 252. Birds of America, Octavo Anna Hummingbird. No 51. Plate 252. From The Birds of America. Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon. Lith printed and colored J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia. Unframed. Size: 10.25 x 6.5 in John James Audubon can be called the most famous wildlife artist in American history. His namesake, the National Audubon Society can be found across America protecting birds with conservation, advocacy and education. Audubon used his skills as an artist, naturalist and ornithologist to create a pictorial record of all the bird species of North America. Much of our knowledge of birds and animals is due to his detailed illustrations of the 500 species of birds in The Birds of America. This print is from the Octavo First Edition, which was a smaller version, designed to be made more widely available than the first offering which was a large format edition (more than 2x3 feet). The print is a lithograph, produced and hand colored by the publisher indicated on the print. We obtained this hand-painted Audubon print from a famous rare book dealer who had broken apart his copy of Birds of America into individual pages, in order to share this treasure with others. Other prints have been made over the years, including some recently, produced by a variety of techniques. But this hand-colored lithograph is a true piece of history, from one of the most influential naturalists and artists who ever lived. John James Audubon. Anna Hummingbird. No 51. Plate 252.
