Description: Two rare prints on paper: self-portrait of Puerto Rican artist Jose Campeche y Jordan and an oil he painted of Miguel Antonio de Ustariz, who was Governor and General Captain of Puerto Rico from 1789-1792. The prints are in very good condition, no tears, marks or folds (See photos). They have never been framed or exhibited and were probably printed in the 1970's. ARTIST: Jose Campeche y Jordan was born in 1751 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and died there on Nov. 7, 1809. He is the most important painter of portraits and religious imagery in the late 18th Century and early 19th Century in Puerto Rico. Of Afro-Caribbean descent, his father was Black, he probably learned composition, style and technique from imported prints and books as well as from exiled Spanish court painter, Luis Paret y Alcazar. Paret y Alcazar lived in Puerto Rico from 1775-1778. Details of Campeche's life are scarce because his belongings were destroyed after his death.
