Fruit first develops near the base of the inflorescence while the upper part is still in flower, and averages 25 to 40 per cluster. Annual fruit production varies greatly under natural conditions. Generally, fruit is produced only in wetter years. On extremely harsh sites the Joshua tree flowers rarely, if at all. Seeds are dispersed chiefly by wind and animals. Birds frequently open the fruit, exposing seeds for subsequent wind dispersal. A number of desert rodents are known to cache Joshua tree seeds and may also disperse seed. Fruit can persist on the tree, but usually disintegrates rapidly. SEED GERMINATION: To encourage faster germination, soaking the seeds in a cup for about 24 hours, then drain the water, keep them moist in the cup for another 2-4 days with a small amount of water, rememeber to keep them moist with a couple drops of water every couple hours so they dont dry out. Then they will sprout tails about 1/4"or bigger when they are ready to plant. A 4- to 6-inch pot with drainage holes and filled with seed-starting soil will enable the seedling to grow with ease. Sow each seed to a depth of about 1/2 inch. They germinate more reliably when set in full sun, at a temperature of 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. SEEDLING CARE: Keep your sprouts in a warm, sunny place until transplant time, around early spring, If you're on the cooler end of the spectrum for growing the desert fixture, keeping the young ones inside for more than a year can give it a sturdier start when facing its first outdoor winter. As the sapling grows, repotting to increasingly large containers with drainage holes may be necessary until the final transplanting occurs.
