Description: This is an offering for one extra large piece of pumice that floats in water. This specimen will be selected from a crate that we brought brought back to Utah and will be 10" to 14" from end to end and weigh between 3 and 5 pounds. In Farmer's Market measurements, about the size of an average watermelon. These igneous wonders come from a quarry in Central Oregon. It was produced when Mt. Mazama exploded 7,700 years ago, creating the deepest natural swimming pool in the USA, known locally as Crater Lake. Each specimen is perfect for impressing your geology students, wowing your friends at the gym or providing you with a very unique planter for your bonsai garden. Geologically, pumice is created when a silica rich lava called rhyolite absorbs water on its way out of the earth. The water boils when it leaves the vent, expanding and cooling the lava to create a holey, light and very buoyant rock. The commercial applications range from construction material to kitty litter, movie props and soil amendments. All of the rocks we ship will float in water when they are dry and promise to put a twinkle in your eye.
