Late 17th Century Wrought Iron Massive 4 Footed Hearth Skewer Massachusetts 42+"

Description: Very early American made piece. Very few of these have survived. Late 17th century American blacksmith made 4 footed skewer spit. Unique construction, seldom seen form. Very heavy solid well made piece. Very very early blacksmith techniques.You can see the early pulled pig iron in this piece, like rings in a tree section. Massachusetts acquired long ago. A massive 42 1/4" long. Legs are 3.5" wide. Extremely early developing hanging loop at top, the predecessor of the rattail. Most likely used with one of the earliest standing hearths. It's too large for my hearth LOL Very nice hot twist decoration on handle. An extra couple of twists at the point end to pierce the meat to be roasted. Super rare example in size. Rare early developing form. I'd date this one most likely from 1670-1690. So very difficult to find... the ONLY one of this craftsmanship and age and size that I've ever found in 50 years of collecting. No maker marks, beautiful workmanship. You can truly still feel the blacksmith's hammer on these early pieces. Nice honest patina. These are very rare and seldom seen in this early construction form. I've never seen another this early of these in my 50 years of adding to the collection. Massachusetts acquired many many years ago, from my private collection. Weight pre package is almost a full 2 pounds of iron weight in its earliest American form. Early constructed example. I am a 3rd generation early American hearthware and utilitarian collector.
