Description: Late 19th century sampler, possibly Scottish, by Annie.S. Pettigrew - 1889. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a dog and bird to the right of the last row. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with numerous small plaques containing sets of family initials with a crown above all but two. There is an expanse of grass below with a delightful two storey house standing in the centre with two trees and a dog to its left and right, both dogs with a bird above them. Annie's name and the date of 1889 then run across the bottom edge of the gauze. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler to the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler has originally been over a stretcher. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also some stitch loss to the outer zigzag border. There are also small visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze and the sampler itself seem to be sitting on a backing card. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century burr walnut frame with integral ebonised slip which is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age. Measures 13 1/4" x 17" (sight size) and 15 3/4" x 19 1/2" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
