Description: LAVATER STUDIEN FUR PHYSIOGNEMIKER collection of 40 ENGRAVED plates in a leather and cloth folder each measure 12' X 9 5/8". They were published circa 1800 to accompany Johann Caspar Lavater's science of physiognomics (reading human character from external physical features.) Some of the plates are identified as Hercules, Socrates, Rodolfus I Imperator, Marie Fluckigger, Albertus Haller, Fridericus IV Imperator, Maximilianus Imperator, Tiberius, Brutus, Titus, Julius Caesar, Ren. Cartesius, Isaac Neuton, Carolus v. Hedlinger, Niclas Tomelli, etc; others are not identified; one appears to be Benjamin Franklin. Other plates show various physical features; some plates are signed; most are not. The folder's leather spine is chipped at its top and bottom 1/3; the ribbon ties were taped to the inside covers; a small notation is pencilled at top rear of many plates; most have foxing at the extremities; they are overall VG to EX condition. A rare collection. Thank you.
