Description: Here is a wonderful old German mineral specimen from the Potash mine, in Rossleben, in Saxony-Anhalt. Leonite is a pseudomorph after Picromerite, which used to be called Schonite, which is a rare Halide mineral. This mineral does look like Feldspar, but, in reality, is much softer and water solible, together with the Halite salt crystals it grows with. This is an old piece, likely from the academy collection in Freiberg Saxony. Just excellent for the locality and this rare species. And yes, again, being a softer and water soluble mineral, take care in cleaning this mineral by not using water. But still don't discount it, as it is quite rare and confined to deep potash mines/deposits. In this specimen, the Leonite crystals are smaller than in the other specimen I just listed, and missed the arttached written label, But on the flip side, the crystals of Leonite/Picromerite are incredibly shapr, and also there is a more rich concentration of sharp Halite crystals. So as a whole, I would consider this a higher quality mineral specimen overall. But then of course, they would both belong together in a suite for this classic German locality.A rare sulfate species...Potash mine, Querfurt, This specimen is 14 3/8 oz in weight, or 408 grams. The size is 4.5 inch x 3 inch x 2.5 inch. Please be advised, I ship with Ground Advantage.
