Description: I bought this historic button, over two inches in diameter, in Washington on the day of the March. The March on Washington is now remembered mainly as the occasion of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. But its full name, "The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom," captures its unifying intent, embracing both civil rights and the labor movement. The former is symbolized by the iconic image of joined black and white hands, and the iconography of the latter is on every surface of the pin. On the front, tiny letters read "Allied Printing Trades Council New York." The numeral 9 identifies the particular shop that printed the pin. The edge of the pin bears, in an even smaller font, the initials I.P.E.U., standing for International Photo-Engravers Union. Again, the adjacent numeral identifies the local that did the work. And the back of the pin is stamped with the word "Label" and an image of three crossed metal-working tools, the symbol of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association.
