Marttiini MN127013 Scandinavian Knife Imported from Finland

Description: Marttiini MN127013 Scandinavian Knife Imported from Finland Marttiini has manufactured knives in Rovaniemi, Finland since 1928. Marttiini tends to try to strike a balance between beauty, functionality, and ease of sharpening. The blades are not as tough as those from other scandinavian knife makers, usually 53-54 Rockwell, which is still quite tough and they hold an edge very well. The handles are curly birch, either natural, stained, or lacquered. The marttiini knives are also much more affordable than other scandinavian knives.Scandinavian knife blades have what is known as a scandinavian grind, which means that the knive only has one bevel, running from roughly the center of the knife to the edge. This is the defining characteristic of scandinavian knives, as most other types of knive blades have two bevels: one that slopes more gently towards the edge, and then another bevel that slopes more sharply to form the actual edge of the blade. Scandinavian blades are very easy to sharpen, and very difficult to sharpen incorrectly. You don't need any kind of pre-formed sharpening jig or device or tool kit, just a flat stone. Lay the knife blade on top of the stone, or lay the stone on the knife, tilted to follow the angle of the bevel, and start running it back and forth until it gets sharper. The knife controls the angle for you. This also makes it much easier to sharpen a blade in the field. Scandinavian knives are also superior for wood carving, as again the single-bevel design controls the angle for you.The blackened blade features an embossed Marttiini signature, and the handle is a very attractive stacked affair of stained wood and reindeer antler, with a hooked pommel to give you a better grip. The stamped leather sheath is a traditional scandinavian deep pouch style, stitched up the back, and has a twisted leather thong to securely attach it to your belt while allowing more flexibility of movement than a more rigid belt loop. The sheath also has a partial insert at the bottom, to protect both the sheath and the hand from the blade slicing through if inserted incorectly. Below are the detailed measurements of this knife. One important note: for best comfort and grip, the length of your middle finger should be similar to the circumference of the handle.Blade Material: carbon steelKnife Length: 8.75 inches (22.2 cm)Blade Length: 4 inches (10.2 cm)Blade Width: 0.57 inches (1.4 cm)Blade Thickness: 0.08 inches (2 mm)Knife Weight: 3.3 ounces (94 grams)Handle Length: 4.75 inches (12.1 cm)Pommel: stained woodHandle Circumference: 3.5 inches (8.9 cm)Handle Material: wood and antlerSheathed Weight: 4.8 ounces (136 grams)Sheathed Length: 9.75 inches (24.8 cm)Belt Loop Width: 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) Marttiini has manufactured knives in Rovaniemi, Finland since 1928.
