Marx The 49'er Polyethylene Western Style Battery Train Set + OB

Description: Here is one of the more unusual toy trains ever put out by Louis Marx & Co. It is "The 49'er Battery-Operated Polyethylene Train", and this particular set is complete with its original box! This must have been aimed at the little folks, to be their first train set. Unlike other Marx "starter sets", the pieces in this set are all flexible polyethylene. Another oddity is that virtually every item in this set was only used in THIS set (or its British or Mexican version equivalents). So this isn't one that you just "put together" by picking up common pieces to round out the set. The train itself is 4 units - @49 old timer steam loco in black, Marlines coal tender in black, yellow gondola, and red baywindow style caboose (an odd combo - old time engine with a baywindow caboose!). The cars have plastic wheels and axles and a type of plastic knuckle coupler that is similar to (but not the same as) those on their regular trains. These flexible couplers WILL hook to regular hard plastic knuckle couplers. Then there are 8 curved tracks and 2 straight tracks. The set is battery powered. Unfortunately, this engine has some corrosion in the battery compartment, and does not currently run (see the last photo). Still, a neat conversation piece that would look great on any collector's shelf. Box is present, but does have split corners, and one of the short ends is partially missing (again, see those many photos). Lots of pics, so you can judge this rarity for yourself, with a yardstick in many of the pics for size reference.
