Description: “Mary Lincoln – Wife & Widow” - Carl Sandburg & Paul M. Angle - Signed This is a true first edition signed title that seldom comes to the marketplace and rarely in this condition. I had looked for years to acquire this for my personal Carl Sandburg / Lincoln collection. Printed in 1932 this is the second of the first three Carl Sandburg Abraham Lincoln titles he authored, all which were also printed in signed limited editions prior to the first trade editions. The first signed limited editions of his Abraham Lincoln – The Prairie Years published in 1926 had a first signed edition of 260 copies are priced from $3,000 to $4,000 for the two volume set. The first signed limited editions of his Abraham Lincoln – The War Years published in 1939 had a first signed edition of 500 copies and are priced at $2,500, or more, for the for volume set. Mary Lincoln – Wife & Widow was published in 1932 and had a signed limited edition of 260 copies of which 250 copies were for sale. It is signed by both authors; Carl Sandburg and Paul M. Angle on the Limited Edition Page. This is copy #35 and was from the library of a former Michigan State University professor of History. On first glance one can see that this copy was well taken care of. It is contained in a slipcase, apparently of contemporary manufacture, that is somewhat uniformly sunned, and is of nearly the same color as the book. The slipcase does show some shelf wear but is still solid. It is numbered 35 on the rear lower spine in white ink. The book itself is a very handsome volume. The slipcase surely has done its job over the years. The linen covered boards exhibit minimal rubbing, corners are good with no bumping and are a light blue in color. The volume is quarter bound with a tan linen spine has a tan paper label with black titles. It still retains the original acetate dust jacket although it has yellowed, somewhat brittle with age, and a closed tear on the spine of it. It has, however, lightly browned the spine of the book a bit over the years due to the typical chemical reaction of these dust jackets, but is still very presentable. The page bottoms and for edges are deckle cut and the top edge is gold gilt and remarkably unimpaired. The original owner’s embossed library stamp is on the front fly page and a small bookseller’s label is tipped in on the rear pastedown. I am reluctant to see this one go from my bookcase but am at the age I am needing to limit my holdings that the children have no interest in owning in posterity. If you have any questions or requests for additional photos feel free to reach out to me through eBay. I will respond as soon as possible although I am occasionally away over the weekends. It will be shipped Priority Insured.
