Description: Vintage authentic Mayan (indigenous people) ceremonial wood mask depicting a native chief with bird-snake-leaf-themed headpiece, hand carved of local wood by a local artisan. This mask was purchased in an Antigua market in 1993. Masks of this type have been worn during native festivals for centuries, and their use probably pre-dates European arrival in the Americas. Eye holes allow the wearer to see. The chief design is not uncommon among these masks, but carving quality varies significantly from one piece to another. Excellent condition in view of age. Eyelet screws and wire added to facilitate hanging the mask on a wall. Approximate dimensions: height, 13 1/4"; width, 8 3/4"; depth 6". Minor imperfections from the original mask construction. Please view the attached photos for visual inspection of this particular piece.
