Description: CONDITION: Possible tiny chip to rose finial on lid. So little, can hardly tell. There are no other defects of any kind. This porcelain chocolate cup and saucer with lid was produced in Germany by Meissen in the 1890s or earlier. It has the first quality under glaze crossed swords marking. The saucer is 5 1/2 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 inches deep. The cup is 4 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/4 inches across the handles. It has a deep, rich cobalt blue ground. The front of the cup has a reserve containing a scene of 18th century lovers in a garden landscape. The hand painting is of the highest quality with fine details and vivid coloring. The back of the cup has a reserve containing a large bouquet of realistic flowers accompanied by tiny insects. The reserves are framed in elaborate hand gilding. The borders on all of the pieces have lacy gilding. A figural rose with stem and leaves, serves as a finial for the lid. The saucer has an attached reticulated gallery which holds the cup in place. It is also known as a “trembleuse” cup and saucer. This is one of the most superb cabinet pieces of Meissen porcelain you can find.
