The game is set in the subway system beneath Moscow (known as the "Metro," hence the name) after World War III. With the surface world devastated and too radioactive for humans to occupy, survivors crammed into the series of subway tunnels. They must share and attempt to gather meager supplies, while fighting against mutated monsters, supernatural beings, and warring survivor factions. It follows the story of Artyom, a soldier seeking to join the Polis Rangers and defeat a race of mysterious creatures known as the Dark Ones. Artyom must spend most of the game fighting underground, making his way through various tunnels, service corridors, caves, and hidden structures.
