Description: Found this in a stack of family photo albums and papers going back to the 30's and 40's while clearing out the attic. I believe it to be original since it was among papers and other military items belonging to a family member who served in WWII. The AVG - American Volunteer Group also known as the Flying Tigers was a group of about 100 combat/fighter pilots from all branches of the US Armed Forces who technically resigned their commissions in the US Military, and traveled to China as civilians to fly in the defense of China against the Japanese aggression taking over Chinese territories. It was a strategy that technically was supposed to prove that it wasn't the US that was bombing Japan and shooting down Japanese fighters and planes, but rather civilians who were drafted and paid by the Chinese Gov't. The US supplied their P-40C aircraft to the Chinese Gov't as being one of our allies. The term Flying Tigers came from the fact that the P-40s has the likeness of a shark mouth painted on the nose of their aircraft to add a little more fear into the Japanese pilots. Since these AVG pilots didn't speak Chinese, these Blood Chits were sewn inside their flight jackets and if shot down and lucky enough to land in China, they would show these blood chits to their rescuers. The chits basically said " I am flying in defense of China against Japan, and if you return me to the Chinese officials/Gov't there will be a large reward for getting me back safely." This chit is 10 1/2" tall X 8 1/2" wide and in mint condition, no damage or stains.
