So much so that in 2002, Steve McCurry joined a crew from National Geographic Television & Film to search for and check on the Afghan girl from the photo and found her. Her name is Sharbat Gula. After all these years, the Afghan girl, Gula, is living a relatively normal life in Afghanistan; she is a wife and a mother, she is religious and prays every day, and Gula wishes for a better life for her children. Because of the ongoing war in Afghanistan, Gula’s story from National Geographic magazine is still intriguing to many around the world. McCurry said that he receives letters consistently asking of Sharbat Gula’s situation and how they can help her in her post.
