Vintage and antique sewing machines may use a different needle system, may be longer than the standard needle or have a round shank at the top. If a machine does not have the correct needle and if that needle is not inserted correctly the machine will not sew. Most newer machines require the needle be inserted with the flat side to the back. A vintage machine may need the flat side to the left or right, depends on the machine and where the hook picks up the loop. It is explained in more detail in my book.
