New Hampshire 11th Private Relates Lee's Surrender, Confederates Captured

Description: 3 pp, 5 x 8, Berks [Burke’s] Station, J.N. Marsh (likely John N. Marsh), April 4th, 1865, to his parents. Marsh enlisted as a private on August 28, 1862, and was mustered into A Co., NH 11th Infantry, which was involved in a number of significant battles including, Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor, Cedar Creek Wilderness, Hatcher’s Run, Spotsylvania Court House, the Siege of Vicksburg, Siege of Petersburg. “...Most of the time, there is good news in the army. Old [Robert E.] Lee has surrendered with his whole army, 30 thousand men. They will be here at 12 o’clock today. I shall probably see them. We have taken 30 thousand prisoners since a week ago last Sunday. I put one hundred and five dollars in the Christian Commission’s hands...to send to you. I don’t know when we shall get paid again...I think the war is about over. I think we all shall get home this summer...I don’t think there will be more fighting...We have got all of the Army of Northern Virginia. There is about 40,000 men...I was out foraging yesterday.
