Description: Published in 2014, Nobuyoshi Araki created “Photography for the Afterlife” as a quasi-chronicle of his photographic career, believing his remaining time on earth to be short due to his age and declining health. Comprising more than 300 pages, “Photography for the Afterlife” encompasses all the works in which the master photographer has dealt with the themes of life and death over the past 50 years, whether in black-and-white or in color. This includes, of course, some of his most famous masterpieces, from the early “Sachin” to “Sentimental Journey/Winter Journey”, “Chiro Ai Shi” (about the final days of his beloved cat) and “Road”. Further, essays by writer Masaru Hamada, philosopher Mario Perniola and writer Kaori Fujino provide further insight into Araki’s oeuvre and his relationship with death.
