Partially printed documents, each naming the ship and captain, goods shipped, and a handwritten market report. Interesting reflections of the times, Jany. 23rd 1838, “The difficulty of negotiating drafts on the North has produced a stagnation in the corn market …Potatoes…and all other articles are only nominal, no sales can be affected to any extent.” Firms represented are: Anderson & Goodridge, Souter & Bell and Duncan Robertson, each with decorative woodblock prints of sailing vessels. All are addressed to Thomas E. Oliver, Esq., Merchant, Portsmouth, N.H. A very fine clean lot, minimal age toning, each with legible to bold Norfolk handstamps. Lot of five. Shipped by USPS First Class package.These letters show the effect of President Jackson's Specie Circular of 1836 which ordered that all but state banks must pay in specie. A general depression followed and numerous factories in the north closed. There was a widespread decline in agricultural markets, as a result people in cities starved in the winter of 1837-38.
