Description: Obey Giant (Grenade), Shepard Fairey, Signed, Numbered Artist: Shepard Fairey Title: Obey (Grenade) Year: 1998 Medium: screen print on paper Size: 24″ x 18″ Edition size: 100 Numbered: 69/100 Signature and date: Shepard Fairey 98 Style: Street art, urban art Campaign: OBEY Giant This a rare Shepard Fairey print from the late 1990s. I don’t see them come up very often. Condition: Excellent. Stored in a flat file since new. Unframed. There is some very minor waviness to the paper which you can see in the photos of the edges of the piece. This subtle waviness I don’t believe will be apparent if the print is framed. The image quality is excellent. You may notice some extremely small, pin-point ink defects. Other pieces I have from this edition of 100 have the same pin-point ink defects leading me to believe the defects were in the screen, or the result of screen clogging at the time of printing. The photos are ones I took of the actual piece. The border is very good. There is minor creasing in the lower lefthand corner and some rusty discoloration in the upper right hand corner. The signature and edition numbering are clear and robust. Details: This is a print from 1998, early in Shepard’s street art career. The image features a hand holding a spray-can-grenade emblazoned with the Andre logo-face, emanating lightning bolts in a radial pattern in the background. GIANT appears on a banner at the bottom of the piece. OBEY appears across the top. This piece is a numbered print from an edition of 100. It is numbered, in pencil, in the lower-left margin and signed and dated by Shepard, in pencil, in the lower-right margin. About the artist: Shepard Fairey is one of America’s most prolific and well-known street artists. In the 1990s he began wheat pasting his graffiti, pop art, and propaganda-inspired OBEY Giant posters, in multiples, across the urban landscape. He was also known for pasting huge Andre the Giant logo-face posters in high-visibility, hard-to-reach places. When I lived in San Francisco in the 90s and early 2000s, I was always amazed to see his Andre faces—they must have measured 12’ x 20’—on the sides of buildings and cranes around the city. His work invites the viewer into curiosity about their surroundings and into questioning establishment media the conformity it engenders. Shepard Fairey, through his dogged and diligent poster campaigns, has worked to democratize both art and the urban media environment. I think it’s fair to say that Shepard Fairey is one of America’s most important, living artists. The Story: In 1999 I produced a poster show and sale in San Francisco called “Jet-Set Modern.” It featured mid-century modern travel and advertising posters. I also wanted to include well known street artists and I reached out to Shepard and David Kinsey to ask if they would like to be a part of it. To my pleasant surprise, they agreed to come up and show and sell their work. I included my own street art (L-Dopa) in the sale and felt myself in very good company indeed. I bought these prints from Shepard at that sale. Shipping details: I will wrap the print in tracing paper and ship it in a sturdy, wide-diameter mailing tube with extra material in the ends of the tube to keep the print stable.
