Description: Orig Pencil Signed 1969 handcolored Lithograph/Sukkot/Chaim Goldberg 1917-2004 An original 1969 hand colored Lithograph measuring matted size 19 x 13 in. (not seen out of frame/matting) with overall framed dimension at 25 x 19 in. and entitled "SUKKOT" and pencil signed in lower right margin "CHAIM GOLDBERG" and numbered and limited lower left as "XV/CLXXV" in very good condition with some age toning throughout Chaim Goldberg (1917-2004) was a Polish Jewish artist, painter, sculptor and engraver who became an American citizen in 1973. Goldberg is well known for being like Chagall an artist who drew heavily on Jewish themes and life for the subject of many of his works of art. Born in the small Polish village or Shtetl of Kazimierz Dolny in Eastern Poland, Goldberg survived the Holocaust unlike many in his village and following the collapse of Germany he emigrated to Israel where he drew deeply upon the Holocaust with a profound mission. But by 1967 Goldberg and his family emigrated to the United States settling in Boca Raton, Florida where he pursued his art with passion, dying in 2004 at the age of 87. The present work was created soon after Goldberg's entry into the United States - and it draws upon the Judaic tradition of SUKKOT in a shtetl perhaps not unlike the one he was born and raised in. The large bearded figure in the right foreground carries a palm branch in his enormous right hand (The lulav actually, which is made up of three plants - a long, swordlike palm branch flanked by willow and myrtle branches and bound together with dried palm leaves. The fourth of the species is the fragrant etrog, which is a citrus fruit and looks like a bumpy lemon. In his left hand he gently cradles a covered bowl and is headed for the palm roofed SUKKOT in the village below. During the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, it is traditional to eat and, for some, to sleep in a Sukkah for seven days. Sukkot is one of the three major festivals in Judaism, and is both an agricultural festival of thanksgiving and a commemoration of the forty-year period during which the children of Israel wandered in the desert after leaving slavery in Egypt, living in temporary shelters as they traveled. It is therefore a time of happiness and celebration - and the villagers below appear intent on celebrating with vivacity. It is however interesting to note that Goldberg depicts a single man hurrying to the Sukkah below - a bachelor?A window? Goldberg's alter ego? Perhaps.
