Description: Original PAIR of WW1 AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN military maps of the RUSSIAN EMPIRE entitled "BOBRUJSK" & "GLUSK". (The maps have been mounted on a linen backing as a single 'composite' sheet, and once formed part of the private collection of ALAN GRANT OGILVIE - see below for further details). Produced by the Austro-Hungarian military mapping services - "K.u.k. Militargeographisches Institut". In terms of exact dating, the map on the right is of a slightly earlier style where the original survey date is in a small square in the bottom right corner. In this instance, the earlier survey from 1891 has been superseded by a later printing of at least 1896. The map on the left is of a slightly later style dating to approximately 1910 onwards. On this later style, the words "Teilweise berichtigt bis..." appear before the 'partial correction' dates. The date is provided in a more expanded format. In this case it reads "16 V...." (16th May) but the year is obscured by the overlap. I have tried to show this in the photos with two different strength light sources from behind, but the date of the map on the right fits exactly over it. Regardless, there's no doubt that these maps were being used during WW1 as they came into the possession of ALAN GRANT OGILVIE with hundreds of others during his military service in the Balkans. His work mapping for the British clearly afforded him possession of a steady stream of captured enemy maps. The territory covered now forms part of modern day BELARUS. Some evidence of slight margin trimming with no significant loss to the original content. This was almost certainly done when the maps were joined and the linen backing was applied. The sheet is therefore in great condition and has never been folded. Bears the stamp of "A.G.OGILVIE" in the top margin. Professor ALAN GRANT OGILVIE was an eminent geographer whose service with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1 led him to transfer to the Royal Engineers for the purpose of mapping the Dardanelles and the Macedonian Front etc. His military service in Salonika, France and the Dardanelles saw him mentioned in dispatches, and in 1919 he attended the Paris Peace Conference representing the British delegation in respect to international boundary settlements. Following WW1 he resumed his academic career, rising to head Edinburgh University's Geography Department, still finding time to become a Captain in the Home Guard during WW2. He died 'in post' in 1953, and it would appear that his private collection was bequeathed to the University. His maps were clearly his 'working tools' and he had good access to a range of captured enemy maps as part of his work. This composite map comes from a much wider collection recently sold off by Edinburgh University. Will be shipped rolled in a stout cardboard tube.
