About the artist: Philip Reisman 1904-1992At the age of four, Reisman escaped the Polish pogroms with his mother and three siblings to reunite with his father and two older brothers in New York. Due to their poverty, his father dissuaded him from pursuing an early interest in art. Nonetheless, Reisman left high school after six months to attend the Art Students League. Supporting himself with odd jobs, he managed to study there for six years. His initial works depicted the raw, bustling life of New York's Lower East Side, featuring butchers, carters, peddlers, and the homeless of the Bowery. His inaugural solo exhibition in 1932 garnered critical acclaim. In 1944, Reisman spent a summer on Cape Ann, captivated by the fishing industry in Gloucester. He created sketches for his painting "Mackerel Machine" at a Gloucester processing plant, where mackerel were canned for military use. Reisman perceived a parallel between the lives of those striving to earn a living from the sea and city residents battling to survive in a frequently adversarial environment. He painted well into his eighties, aiming, he stated, "to perpetuate the humanist perspective." All of our items are guaranteed to be shipped the same or next business day.
