Description: LOLOT WHICH IS ALSO KNOWN AS WILD BETEL IS A HERBACEOUS PERENNIAL VINE THAT IS RELATED TO THE BLACK PEPPER PLANT. LOLOT SPREADS BY CREEPING RHIZOMES THAT BRANCHES OFF INTO MANY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS ALONG THE GROUND GROWING LIKE A GROUND COVER. CLUMPS OF ERECT LEAFY STEMS CAN RANGE FROM 1 TO 3 FEET TALL AND ARE CAPABLE OF QUICKLY COLONIZING NEW GROUND TO EVENTUALLY FORM A MAT OF DENSE LEAFY GROUND COVER. THE LEAVES OF LOLOT IS HEART SHAPED, VARY FROM 4 TO 7 INCHES IN DIAMETER,AND VERY SIMILAR TO THAT OF BLACK PEPPER.THE TOP OF THE LEAF IS A VERY GLOSSY DARK GREEN WHILE THE BOTTOM IS MORE DULL IN COLOR. SMALL WHITE FLOWER SPIKES EVENTUALLY BECOME GREEN. THE FLOWERS ARE EITHER FEMALE OR MALE AND ONCE FERTILIZED WILL SOMETIMES FORM A SMALL ROUND FRUIT THAT CONTAINS ONE SEED. LOLOT PREFERS A RICH, WELL DRAINED SOIL WITH PARTIAL SHADE. DO NOT GROW IN AREAS WHERE WATER LOGGING IS A PROBLEM. LOLOT IS TRADITIONALLY CULTIVATED FOR IT'S DARK GREEN LEAVES WHICH IS USED IN BOTH COOKING AS WELL AS FOR IT'S MEDICINAL PROPERTIES. IN SOUTHEAST ASIA THE LEAVES ARE EATEN LIKE A VEGETABLE AND USED TO WRAP MEAT SUCH AS BEEF AND OR PORK. IN LAOTIAN AND MALAY CUISINE, THE LEAVES ARE PREPARED FRESH AS A SALAD. THE ENTIRE PLANT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE ANODYNE, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, AS WELL AS EXPECTORANT PROPERTIES. TRADITIONALLY IT HAS BEEN USED IN DIFFERENT CULTURES TO TREAT SKIN DISEASES, RHEUMATISM, DIARRHEA, AND HEADACHES. THE ENTIRE PLANT IS TYPICALLY COLLECTED, DURING IT'S FLOWERING PERIOD, DRIED, THEN STORED. TO GROW YOUR BETEL/LOLOT PLANT YOU WILL NEED A GOOD QUALITY WELL DRAINING SOIL. A HOT AND HUMID WEATHER PATTERN IN A MOSTLY SHADED AREA PROVIDES THE BEST ENVIRONMENT FOR LOLOT TO THRIVE. IT MAY BE GROWN IN A MEDIUM SIZED DEEP HANGING BASKET OR PLANTER POT, PREFERABLY ONE THAT HAS A SELF WATERING RESERVOIR BUILT INTO THE POT. THESE CAN BE OBTAINED FROM YOUR LOCAL BIG BOX HARDWARE STORES FROM THE GARDEN CENTER. ALTERNATIVELY IT MAY BE GROWN BELOW ANY LARGE SHADE TREE WHERE THE SOIL BELOW THE CANOPY OF THE TREE REMAINS MOIST. LOLOT CAN BE GROWN IN NORTHERN CLIMATES AS LONG AS YOU BRING YOUR PLANT INDOORS IF TEMPERATURES DROP BELOW 40 F. THIS IS A VERY TOUGH PLANT THAT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO FREEZE DURING THE WINTER TIME, THEN RE-SPROUT DURING THE SPRING SINCE IT USES UNDERGROUND RHIZOMES AS RUNNERS THAT CREATE NEW SHOOTS.FERTILIZER: SIDE DRESSING YOUR PLANTS WITH AGED MANURE IS EXCELLENT SINCE LOLOT LOVES NITROGEN. ALTERNATIVELY, YOU MAY ALSO USE A NITROGEN BASED FERTILIZER EVERY 2 TO 3 MONTHS TO KEEP RUNNERS PRODUCING NEW SHOOTS IF YOU ARE GROWING IN A GARDEN AREA BELOW A LARGE SHADE TREE. THERE IS NO NEED TO REMOVE YOUR PLANT FROM THE BIODEGRADABLE CUP WHICH MIGHT RISK SHOCKING OR KILLING YOUR PLANT. PLACE THE ENTIRE CUP WITH THE PLANT IN YOUR POT OR GARDEN LOCATION. THE CUP WILL BREAK DOWN AS THE PLANT CONTINUES TO GROW. IF YOUR PLANT ARRIVES DAMAGED BEYOND VIABILITY THEN CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY WITH PICTURES OF BOTH THE BOX AND THE DAMAGED PLANT SO THAT I CAN ADDRESS THE ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I DO MY BEST TO KEEP ALL MY CUSTOMERS HAPPY SO PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK BEFORE ALLOWING ME A CHANCE TO MAKE THE SITUATION RIGHT. HOWEVER, I CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE DUE TO FAILURE TO WATER YOUR PLANT, LEAVING IT IN EXCESSIVELY HIGH HEAT/SUNLIGHT OR LOW/FREEZING TEMPERATURES. PLEASE NOTE THAT I CANNOT SHIP THIS PLANT TO HAWAII DUE TO RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED BY THE STATE OF HAWAII FOR THIS SPECIFIC PLANT.
