Description: Here is a very rare silk-faced Japanese doll carrying a silk thread spool called an "itomaki" used as a bobbin for winding and unwinding silk thread used in looms for making kimono. The doll was hand crafted in the 1960's with a hand painted face. Her moss green and cherry red kimono is in beautiful condition, though, as expected after 65 years of age, it shows some fading in several areas (see photos). The crepe obi is extravagant! The doll stands at 17" tall on a black lacquer base. These types of dolls are often called "Nishi" after the venerable doll making company in Japan. I have never seen one on the market posing with an itomaki in hand.
