Description: Offering the complete Vol. xvi, No. 393 of Puck Magazine, 10 x 13 ¼, featuring a phenomenal cartoon, in color, of Belva Lockwood and other members of the Republican Party, entitled, “The ‘Busted’ Side-Show. The country is full of wrecked theatrical troupes walking home.” Lockwood had been nominated to run for President in 1884 and in 1888 by the National Equal Rights Party. Very fresh and vibrant colors and easy to frame. Lockwood (October 24, 1830-May 19, 1917) was an attorney, educator and author, active in working for women’s rights, including women’s suffrage. After college she became a teacher and principal. She graduated from law school in Washington, DC, and became one of the first female lawyers in the United States. In 1879, she petitioned Congress to be allowed to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, becoming the first allowed to practice before the Supreme Court. While Victoria Woodhull is commonly cited as the first woman to run for president, she wasn’t old enough to run, unlike Lockwood. Lockwood, however, was unable to vote as women weren’t allowed to vote until the 19th amendment was ratified in 1920.
