During WWII he served in the Western Desert, Italy and North West Africa. He won the Military Cross in North Africa and his DSO in North West Europe.At the end of the war in Europe he went to Malaya as a staff officer and in 1946 he started his service with the Parachute Brigade as Brigade Major, the 5th Parachute Brigade until their disbandment in Palestine. From 1948 to 1950 he was an instructor at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, after which he then completed a year's course at the Staff College, Camberley.For the next two years he was Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade in BAOP followed by a tour in 1954 and 1955 as a Company Commander with the 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps in Libya. After attending the Joint Services Staff College he served in the Ministry of Defence on the Joint Planning staff from 1957 -1959. He then transferred to the Parachute Regiment in 1960 on assuming command of the 3rd Battalion. From 1962-1962 he was GSO1 with the British Army in Washington following which he commanded the 16th Parachute Brigade from 1963 -1966 in Cyprus as part of the United Nations Force and in the UK.From May 1966-November 1967 he was Chief of Stagg, HQ Middle East Command and from January to December 1968 he attended the Imperial Defence College. From March 1969 to November 1971 he was Commander of the British Forces in the Gulf with the rank of Major General. He therefore saw the withdrawal of British Forces from both Aden and the Gulf.In January 1972 Field Marshal Gibbs assumed the appointment of Commander 1 (BR) Corps. At the end of that year he became Colonel Commandant of the Parachute Regiment and in April 1974 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief United Kingdom Land Forces with the rank of General after which he became Chief of the General Staff from 1976 - 1979. He retired with the rank of Field Marshal in 1979 and became Vice Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire in 1982 and Lord Lieutenant in 1989.
