Description: RARE MINIATURE TOY BOOK WITH EARLY DEPICTION OF BOY WITH HIS BASEBALL AND BAT, c.1865PICTURE STORIES FOR LITTLE FOLKS. Boston: Degen, Estes, and Co. Publishers, [1865 or 1866]. First edition by this publisher [the publisher operated in Boston from 1865 to 1866, per AAS holding]. Miniature; original plain wrappers (measuring 3.25 x 2.75 inches), 32 pages, sewn (as issued), profusely illustrated with hand-colored engravings, including an early depiction of a boy with his bat and ball [not in Block, Baseball Before We Knew It]. “Willie Smith loves to play ball… he takes his bat and ball, and goes out in the yard, and has a nice play…”. Very good condition, spine chipped, light wear and staining to plain wrappers, text lightly foxed-- a solid copy, with the illustrations bright. A rare example of a toy book with an early depiction of Baseball. Currently absent from the trade and indexed auction records. I was only able to locate a single holding on WorldCat with this imprint (AAS). We have been selling on eBay for more than 2 decades. We pack carefully, ship quickly, and have thousands of happy customers. Our feedback speaks for itself, so purchase with confidence.
