The sculptor is Cleveland School (now Institute) of Art graduate Grace Luse. Created c. 1935-1938 in a small edition (of no more than 50 at the most). Rare opportunity to own a vintage example of a WPA era artwork by a talented artist like Luse. This figure illustrates the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem "Hiawatha," so in contrast to the various storybook figures created by Edris Eckhardt and others to assist teachers and librarians teaching young children to read, this ceramic piece was intended to capture the imagination of older students, introducing them to poetry and to that era's conception of the American West.
